The Ranks
• Deuce is the lowest ranking card and ace is the highest ranking card. • It should be noted that Ace can play the low rank in lowball games. • Ace can be high or low based on the variant being played. In High-Low games, it can be used both as a high and low card.
The poker game is completely about making a poker hand better than the other poker hands in the table to eventually split the pot. The cards that the poker player holds in the game are also mentioned to as the poker hand. Normally, each player in the table is said to hold a “hand” which refers to the cards they hold. • In community card games, the card used to make the poker hand might be common for all players in the center of the board. • In non-community card games the cards are dealt individually to each player to make a hand; however, in rare cases when there are lot of players still heads up in the last rounds, some cards might be dealt as common to all players to make the poker hand.
Players will have to know the poker hand rankings so that they can decide on the exact ranking of their hand in the showdown.
Royal Flush Ten, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace of the same suit is known as the royal flush and this is the best poker hand that you can ever have. A♥ K♥ Q♥ J♥ T♥
Five cards in a straight sequence with the same suit are known as a straight flush. Straight flush can be a high flush or a low flush. The highest flush is AKQJT. The highest flush is called “The Royal Flush”. 6♦ 7♦ 8♦ 9♦ 10♦
Four cards of the same rank are known as a 4 of a kind. 6♣ 6♥ 6♠ 6♦
Three cards of a particular rank and the other two cards of same rank are known as the full house. Three-of-a-kind plus a pair make a full house. 6♣ 6♥ 6♠ 8♣ 8♦
Any 5 cards of the same suit is known as flush 4♦ 6♦ 8♦ 9♦ T♦
Five cards of different suits, but the order of numbers in a straight sequence is known as straight. 5♣ 6♥ 7♠ 8♣ 9♦
Any three cards of equal rank are known as Three-of-a-kind. 8♣ 8♥ 8♠
Two different pairs of equal rank are known as two pair. 8♥ 8♠ 6♣ 6♥
Two cards of the same rank is known as one pair 6♣ 6♥
When the hand that that player contains does not fit in to any of the category stated above, the highest ranked card from each player is compared with the other player. Suppose if one player has K-Q-9-6-2 and the other player has J-10-7-5-2 If both the high cards are of the same ranking, then the second high card from each player is compared.
